Welcome to the Shandy Media Club!
I spent four years at Lancaster University, studying for a BA in English and an MA in Literary and Cultural Studies. I still enjoy reading and have recently re-discovered my love for literary and cultural theory. With a decade’s more life experience, I am beginning to understand it and apply to the world around me with far greater success.
What’s it all about?
The Shandy Media Club was formed for two purposes: one; to publish reviews of the things that I read and watch, and two; to analyse and critique the popular media that I enjoy and examine it from a critical perspective.
It doesn’t bode well for anyone to be a passive consumer of popular culture. We are bombarded with subliminal instructions from the advertising and marketing industries. They are beyond keen to tell us what we should be doing with our lives. Popular Culture is accessible to all, but it’s widespread availability doesn’t make it innocent. It is not free from ideology or politically neutral. Depending on your gender, race, sexuality or religion, it can also be pretty unhealthy for your self esteem.
Can I join in?
The Shandy Media Club is open to guest posts on any popular media. I have a particularly strong interest in Feminism and Music, but if you’ve got a passion, please share it with us.
The Shandy Media Club is open to reviews of any books, films and tv shows which feature diverse cast and characters. I also want to feature works written by diverse writers. Please read my post about the #weneeddiversebooks campaign to find out more and get in touch if you want to write a review.
Please be warned though, I don’t take kindly to people who want to review a particular series of books by E L James, or the films that were based on them. Ugh. No thanks.
If you have an ideas for a guest post, please submit your article to Project Shandy.
