I love this song. It never fails to add a certain spark to my expression or strut to my walk. Like much of my music collection, I found this one in a film, ‘Legally Blonde’ to be precise. And it is as much for the scene in the film that it accompanies as for the song itself that I love it.
I’ve written extensively about why I love Legally Blonde, including writing a quasi-academic essay on it over on the Shandy Media Club, but this song encapsulates why absolutely brilliantly. It’s a message of self empowerment. It’s the point at which the film stops being about Elle trying to get her waster of an ex-boyfriend back and turns into her quest to be true to herself while still succeeding at the top level, at Harvard Law School.
It’s the line of “I’m never gonna be good enough for you, am I?” which rings so true with me. Not least because there’s not one single scrap of desperation in it. It’s packed full of enlightenment and the sense of being set free from an impossible and self imposed set of criteria that you will never meet. I’ve had moments like that, where you look at your life and wonder who the hell you’re trying to impress and whether they’re worth the effort. And then you realise that the only person you need to impress is yourself.
I have come back from a weekend away with a renewed burst of energy for all my projects that can only really be expressed by strutting about my business to this song. And so that makes it the song of the week!
“Better watch out going for the knockout
And I won’t stop till I’m on top now
Not gonna give up until I get what’s mine
Better check that I’m about to upset
And I’m glad now so you better step back
I’m taking over so watch me shine”
